The primary purpose of the Company is to ensure an adequate and justifiable financial return to the shareholders, but it also has a duty of care for the well-being of all its employees.
A written policy is not intended to create a straight jacket or rigid guidelines, but to encapsulate the spirit of the Company to ensure that the underlying philosophy is understood and applied consistently throughout the organisation.
It is Company policy to offer employment irrespective of age sex race or belief to any one who has the skills to meet its requirements. The Company undertakes to provide the necessary training to enable employees to improve their skills to meet changing job requirements. Skills and ability are recognised and rewarded within the norms imposed by the environment, both economic and social in which the company operates. The concept of rigid job demarcation is not accepted and every one is expected to contribute as the situation requires.
The basic principle of the Company’s personnel policy is that the Company is composed of individuals who all contribute to achieving the company objectives. It follows therefore that respect is due to the individual and not to the position. It also follows that every member of the Company is basically good and honest and has the best interests of the Company and their colleagues at heart.
Every employee no matter what their position is accorded the same respect and courtesy and the individual’s personal dignity is recognised at all times. This includes appreciation of the individual’s personal beliefs, strengths and weaknesses (physical intellectual and moral), as well as individual foibles. Employees are expected to express their own individuality and to deal with their fellow employees and company customers in their own individual manner provided it is positive and not detrimental to the company. Creativity and humour are assets to be developed.
Good and effective communication is key to the progress of the company, and it is essential that all suitable means are used to disseminate information, ensure understanding and to elicit response. It is the responsibility of managers to communicate effectively by listening and engaging in discussion, and not just to assume that the communication has been effective.
The onus is on those in authority to comply in all respects with the policy, to lead by example and to propose improvements as conditions change to the Company’s personnel policy and not simply to accept the status quo. The Company will comply with all its legal obligations in the spirit and not just the letter of the law. It will not become involved in any political activity. The Company will attempt at all times to work with and favour companies and organisations, which share our beliefs.
